Today’s excerpt : Rebecca – the grandmother
As she finds her daughter-in-law in pregnant:
“I didn’t understand why my body felt like it was burning. Aaron and I hugged each other, he wiped his tears and I smiled, but for a split second, Amir’s birth resurfaced. Hours of suffering, a delivery that went wrong and mutilated the mother, not the child, not the child, thank God… they all merged into a single vision that faded immediately.”
The memory of the hospital in Jerusalem:
“The memory returned again, as if thirty-five years hadn’t gone by. The Ziv maternity hospital in Jerusalem spread in my mind… I felt as if I were in labour now. A wide hall with high ceilings, a strong smell of detergents, eight beds, equally spaced, awaiting women before labour, no decorations or pictures, I could feel the spirit of the Protestant Sisters who established the place.”
