Lynn Farley-Rose’s latest book The Interview Chain covers a wide range of people, topics and themes, and in today’s guest post she touches on diversity as discussed by Mun Wah, Interviewee Number 20 in The Interview Chain.
“There are many ways of shutting down conversations so that people never bring up diversity issues again. And the thing is that they all sound like nice things to say. Here’s an example. Say I want to talk to you about how hard it is to be Chinese. And you simply go to me, ‘You know even as I am talking to you today I want you to know that I don’t even see your colour. To me you are just a human being. And I was taught to love everybody.’ That’s one way, or people will look for exceptions like Obama, or play devil’s advocate, or change the topic, or simply say that they’ve never had that experience themselves.”
Mun Wah is a leading diversity trainer and film director. His groundbreaking documentary The Color of Fear changed conversations about race and is now required viewing in most US colleges.
