Continuing her series of posts on themes and topics raised in her book, Lynn Farley-Rose touches on the question of gratitude:

“I was struck by how brilliantly Archbishop Tutu expresses appreciation. It made me realise that I have all these appreciative thoughts but I’m busy so I don’t actually tell people. Soon after, I was travelling and the plane was delayed. The flight attendant communicated excellently and she also had a difficult passenger to deal with—I thought she handled them brilliantly. So later on, she’s coming down serving drinks and I say, ‘Do you have a minute? Can I tell you what I saw?’ She says, ‘Sure.”’And I tell the story of what I saw her do and she gets tears in her eyes. She says, ‘I’ve worked here six months and no-one’s ever said anything positive to me about what I’ve done.’ Six months! This isn’t very hard and it doesn’t take that much time and it’s very powerful. It made me think how many missed opportunities I’ve had in my life and how I’m gonna stop doing that.”
